OpenVPN support ending on March 15

We are officially retiring OpenVPN support on March 15, 2025.

Why?

OpenVPN has long been the most popular VPN protocol, but it was originally designed in 2001 – and the internet has changed a lot since then. While it still receives updates, its large codebase, higher CPU usage, and slower connection times make it less efficient than modern alternatives. Additionally, we've seen very low usage of OpenVPN based on the bandwidth data from our servers – which makes it clear that the demand is no longer there.

That’s why we at AzireVPN have fully embraced WireGuard – a fast, modern, and secure VPN tunnel that has gained widespread acceptance across the cybersecurity industry. One of its biggest advantages is its simplicity – with under 5,000 lines of code compared to OpenVPN’s hundreds of thousands. This smaller code base makes it much easier to spot security vulnerabilities and bugs, reducing the risk of potential issues.

What does this mean for you?

  • All of our VPN clients are already based on WireGuard, so if you're using the AzireVPN app, nothing will change. You’re already on the best VPN protocol available!
  • If you’re still using OpenVPN (for example, on a third-party app or router), now is the time to switch. WireGuard is supported on most modern devices and routers.

What’s next?

WireGuard is the future, and we’re focusing all our efforts on making it even better. If you need help migrating, check out our guides or reach out to us at support@azirevpn.com!
